Ingredients
  

  • 3.5 cups bread flour
  • 0.33 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm whole milk (110°F)
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.25 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 gel food colorings (natural alternatives like beet juice recommended)

Method
 

  1. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups bread flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt until no lumps remain
  2. Add warm milk, room-temperature egg, and softened butter using a silicone spatula
  3. Slowly incorporate remaining 0.5 cup flour while stirring until a cohesive dough forms
  4. Knead dough on floured surface for 10 minutes, adding more flour if sticky
  5. Transfer to greased bowl, cover with towel, and let rise in 75°F space until doubled (30-60 minutes)
  6. Divide dough into four portions, tint each with different food coloring
  7. Roll each into ropes, twist together to form spiral, place on baking sheet
  8. Second rise for 15-20 minutes
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), bake for 35 minutes until golden brown

Notes

Substitute 1/2 cup bread flour with all-purpose for more tenderness
Replace milk with almond milk for lactose-free version
Swap butter with coconut oil for vegan option
Use pastel food colorings for best results
